To Whom it May Concern:
I am an independent documentary producer/director based in New Jersey currently attempting to develop a feature-length (90 minute) documentary about Father Grant Gallup and his social activist work in Managua, Nicaragua. In 1990, Father Gallup left the United States to found a mission and school that tends to the neediest children in some of the most impoverished parts of Managua. The film will highlight the role liberation theology plays in a Nicaragua still suffering the aftereffects of the Sandinista revolution, and will feature interviews with both notable Sandinista politicians and the voiceless children Father Gallup’s school educates. Importantly, the film will also emphasize emergent LGBT rights and women’s rights movements in Nicaragua, where homophobic and conservative forms of Christianity often outweigh liberation theology’s strivings for social justice.
While it does foreground Father Gallup’s liberation theology, this projected film is not intended as an evangelical tool (indeed, I am myself a secular person). The film’s primary goal is to shine light onto social justice issues in a part of the world the mainstream media generally overlooks-the recent election of Daniel Ortega may capture the media’s attention insofar as it reflects hemispherical politics, but Nicaragua’s underclass, minorities, and LGBT communities are unlikely to benefit from this temporary spotlight.
I have previously made a feature length documentary, currently under submission to various national and international film festivals, that features Dr. Louie Crew and Bishop Gene Robinson, and which deals with LGBT rights in the Anglican Communion. I have discussed my ideas with Father Gallup about this new documentary focusing on his work, and he is extremely excited to see the film get underway. This is, however, an entirely independent project, outside of the world of mainstream filmmaking (yet also free from its constraints). I am therefore currently looking for donations, large or small, that will help Fr. Gallup and me begin filming in Nicaragua. This is really the kind of project that can get off the ground only through the generosity and selflessness of likeminded people.
