THE CHURCH PENSION FUND

Position Description:  The Trustees of The Church Pension Fund play a critical role in the governance and management of the multi-billion dollar church pension group, including the Church Pension Fund and the following affiliates:  Church Life Insurance Corporation, the Church Insurance Company of New York, New York Captive Insurance Company, the Church Insurance Company of Vermont, the Church Insurance Agency Corporation, Church Pension Group Services Corporation, The Medical Trust, Church Publishing Incorporated, and CREDO Institute, Inc..  The Trustees make significant policy decisions affecting investments, pension benefits and services, life insurance, property and casualty insurance and medical benefits with concern for social, ethical and fiduciary responsibilities. 

 

Qualities and competencies a nominee should have:  Nominees should have a broad, compassionate understanding of the needs of The Episcopal Church and a strong commitment to the Church’s mission and ministry.  In addition, the Board needs expertise in a wide range of financial, legal, accounting and business areas.  Five particularly critical needs are: (a) experience in the management of multi-million dollar investment opportunities; (b) business experience, particularly with respect to audit and financial oversight; (c) sensitivity to the critical need for balancing social responsibilities with fiduciary responsibilities; (d) sensitivity to the needs of the clergy and lay employees and their families; and (e) sensitivity to the needs of The Episcopal Church at-large and its institutions.

 

Duties of Trustees

Number of meetings per year:                           4 for full Board of Trustees Meetings

                                                                        4 for Committees and Affiliate Boards

Usual location of meetings:                                New York City

Usual length of Board meetings:                         2 days and one 3 day off site, usually on weekdays. Some Committee and affiliate board meetings are conducted by conference call.

Other information:  Trustees may serve on the Executive Committee, the Investment Committee, the Social and Fiduciary Responsibility in Investment Committee, the Audit Committee, the Retirement Programs Committee, the Compensation Committee, the Finance Committee, the Diversity and Workplace Values Committee, Committee on Ecclesiastical Offices, Nominating Committee or other special work committees.  Some trustees may serve on the boards of Affiliates.  Additional Information:  Canon I.8.

 

Time Expectations:  Three full Board meetings per year (usually 3 days each) and an annual strategic Off-site Meeting of three to four days.  Other Committee and Affiliate Board meetings:  Four or more days per year (some in conjunction with full Board meetings).
