Hispanic Neighborhoods

New Jersey is 9.6% Hispanic, yet the Diocese of Newark has only one autonomous Hispanic congregation, Grace Church in Union City: it has 83 confirmed communicants (rank 91 out of 126) and a total revenue in 1995 of $65,566 (rank 99 out of 126) It gives 14% to outreach, just 1 percentage point under the diocesan average. Its current rector, The Rev. Richard B. Lampert, is 55.9 years old, not himself Hispanic. The median income for the zip code of the parish is $27,042 (rank 106). Only 4.5% of the residents of the zip code work in executive positions (rank 101), and 4.2% work in specialty professions (rank 112). This congregation has for many years been predominately Cuban. In the U.S. as a whole, "only 4 percent of Hispanics are of Cuban origin..., but Cubans are the most affluent Hispanic group." (American Demographics, January 1997, page 17).

Hispanics are expected to become 12% or higher of the eastern counties of New Jersey by the year 2001. "About 350,000 Hispanic immigrants come to the U.S. every year. They and their U.S.-born children should increase the number of Hispanic Americans from just under 28 million in 1996 to over 32 million in 2001." (American Demographics, ibid.)

The Diocese has not yet embraced any strategy to welcome these immigrants. We have no Hispanic clergy. Hispanic ministry as the accidental (not deliberate) outreach occurs in every inner city parish of the diocese, including Redeemer Morristown, St. Paul's Paterson, All Saints Hoboken, Grace Van Vorst in Jersey City and St. John's Union City. Christ Church Hackensack is beginning a deliberate outreach. St. Anthony of Padua in Hackensack has a program of spiritual outreach that another minister in this community calls "the best in the diocese," overseen by The Rev. Brian H. Laffler.

Diocesan support for Hispanic Ministry of any form is virtually nonexistent. Trinity, Paterson has been supported by the Diocese to a very small degree since April 1996, but it is closing in January forever. Marge Christie, my colleague on the Standing Committee and in the House of Deputies, advised me:

I hope you can blow a clear trumpet. Hispanic ministry in this diocese is even worse than it is nationally. It's a very complex subject, partly because the term Hispanic covers so much -- Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Islands, immigrant, born here -- and partly because their leanings seem to run from Roman Catholic on one end to Pentecostal on the other, and the Episcopal Church doesn't seem to fit. That's not to say we shouldn't try to figure out how to make some kind of fit.
Geoff Curtiss, rector of All Saints Hoboken, has long urged the diocese to devise a clear strategy for doing ministry in all urban areas. For many years now we have been closing parishes in urban areas. The few new parishes we have opened have been in the affluent west.
