Artist Talks with Jeanette May and Corinne May Botz

Brooklyn photographer Jeanette May is interested in examining the photographic image and its ability to convey a broad range of meanings to the viewer. By reversing conventions, incorporating text, and taking a critical approach to “the gaze” of an audience, May highlights the different ways in which men and women are visually represented. Her work has been featured in The New York Photo Review, CBS NY Local, Time Out New York, ARTslant, Washington Post, Ms. Magazine, Chicago Tribune Magazine, and more.

Haunted houses, agoraphobia, murder scenes, and objectophilia—photographer and essayist Corinne May Botz tackles subjects in her work that touch upon psychological and visual intrigue. Engaging ideas about perception, space, and the emotional connections that humans can develop with non-sentient objects, Botz’ photographs suggest complex narratives that she explores further in her writing. Botz has published two books of photographs and essays: “Haunted Houses” (The Monacelli Press/Random House, 2010) and “The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death” (The Monacelli Press, 2004).

Artist Talk with George Lorio Sculptor George Lorio’s aesthetic sensibility has been informed by the places he has lived: decadent and exuberant New Orleans, lush semi-tropical Florida, wintry Michigan, colorful North Carolina, and the dark waters of the Rio Grande, near where he resided and drew inspiration for many years before relocating to Delaware. Over the course of his career, Lorio’s work has transitioned from examining personal experiences and representations of nature to a more focused look at issues surrounding Texas’ border towns. He is currently an associate professor at Delaware State University. Lorio’s work has traveled to many parts of the United States, appearing in exhibitions in twenty five states and Mexico, including nearly two dozen solo shows. Publications that have featured his work include San Antonio Express-News, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Winston-Salem Journal, Art Papers, Times Picayune, Atlanta Journal/Constitution, and others.
