The students at the Institute in 2013 will consist of highly motivated students from local high schools in Newark and nearby communities. There will be a total of 20 students attending the Institute in 2013. When on campus they reside in the newest dormitory on campus during the one-week course and have the opportunity to experience the college atmosphere. Since the program is fully funded, there are no direct charges to students accepted into the program. Both students and their parents/guardians are invited to a reception/lunch on the closing day of the Institute.
It is anticipated that the Institute would raise students’ awareness of the increasing social relevance of ethical dilemmas posed by rapid advances in biotechnology, provide the students with necessary background to understand the main features of these advances, and equip the students to think about how the issues can be approached ethically and rationally.
It is expected that the program will encourage future enrollment at the best colleges and universities by the high school students in attendance in this course.
