The audience was made up of highly motivated students from local
high schools in Newark and nearby inner city communities.
Twenty-four students attended the Institute in 2006.
The students resided in a dormitory on campus during
the one-week course and had the opportunity to
experience the college atmosphere. There was no charge
to the students accepted into the program. Students and
their parents/guardians were invited to a reception/lunch
on the closing day of the Institute.
The Institute was able to raise students’ awareness
of the increasing social relevance of ethical dilemmas
posed by rapid advances in biotechnology, to provide
the students with necessary background to understand
the main features of these advances, and to equip them
to think about how the issues can be approached ethically
It is expected that the program will encourage future enrollment at
the best colleges and universities by the high school students in attendance
in this course.
