CIVIC
MEDIA ARTS PROJECT (CMAP)
Leo Aristimuño, Director
Welcome to the Civic Media Arts Project, a public
scholarship initiative that creatively employs emerging media
arts technologies to enhance civic participation in selected
New Jersey communities.
We employ an array of media technologies to tell the
stories of real people living in evolving urban landscapes.
Following the traditions participatory media, we collaborate
with local organizations to bring concrete media skills to
community members. Participants become producers who create
socially engaged media addressing the concrete challenges
faced by their communities. We also create forums where our
media productions are screened and discussed, leading to
dynamic encounters and revitalized engagement in civic
dialogues.
Our pilot initiative, the ASBURY PARK CIVIC MEDIA ARTS
PROJECT (AP-CMAP)
took place in 2005-2006 in Asbury Park, New Jersey. We are
currently developing initiatives focusing on immigrant
communities of Newark and Paterson.
Leo Aristimuño is Assistant Professor of Video
Production and Media Studies in the Department of Visual

and multi-media performances have been exhibited throughout
the Americas and Europe.
