Majors

The Department offers majors in French, and in Spanish which consist of 30 credits in language and literature; 9 credits in other courses within the Department; and 6 credits in English literature, philosophy, music history and art history. The Department also offers an interdisciplinary 36 credit major in Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies.

The Department offers two cross-cultural, interdisciplinary majors:
Hispanic Civilization and Language Studies is designed to serve the needs of those students for whom a thorough knowledge of the Ibero-American world, its peoples, and its cultural, political and social history will further their educational and professional development. It consists of 39 credits, 24 in language and literature and 15 drawn from appropriate courses offered by participating departments such as history, political science, anthropology, and sociology.

The Central and Eastern European Studies Program is in an inter-departmental major offered under the auspices of the Department of CMLL. It offers an introduction to the literatures, cultures, history, politics, and societies of East-Central Europe. Students with a basic knowledge of Russian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, or any other Slavic or Eastern European language will be given the opportunity to increase their potential as specialists in the area. The major consists of 42 credits and offers two concentrations: one in languages, literatures and cultures, the other in history, politics, and societies. Both concentrations allow for the development of individual majors.
