Scholarships
CAPELLO SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded annually to students majoring in Spanish or Hispanic Civilization,w ith preference to an adult who is returning to complete his or her undergraduate education. Selection is based on academic merit and financial need. Past recipients are Sandra Diaz, Román Lareo, Giselle Rodriguez, Meeta Patel, David Martínez, Vicky Ruiz.
LUSO-AMERICAN FRATERNAL ASSOCIATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
This endowed scholarship was established by the Luso-American
Fraternal Association to continue its legacy as a social support
system for the Newark Portuguese community through providing financial
assistance to students enrolled at the Newark campus of Rutgers,
The State University of New Jersey. Scholarships are to be awarded
to one Newark College of Arts and Sciences or University College-Newark
student per year who is majoring or minoring in Portuguese Studies
and who holds a 3.0GPA. Selection will be made by the program
administrator. Scholarships may be renewed for up to three years
at the discretion of the program administrator.
INDEPENDENCE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION PORTUGUESE STUDIES
SCHOLARSHIP
This annual scholarship is established by the Independence Community
Foundation to provide financial assistance to students enrolled
in the Newark College of Arts and Sciences or University College-Newark
and are majoring or minoring in Portuguese & Lusophone Studies. Scholarships
are to be awarded to full-time undergraduate students based on
academic merit as determined by the program administrator and
financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. Scholarships
are selected by the department administration and may be renewed
for up to three years (four years if a five year program) based
on the availability of funds. Two scholarships will be awarded
each academic year for the length of the scholarship. The Independence
Community Foundation generously established this fund with an
initial gift on August 10, 2005.

STUDY ABROAD
Thanks to a gift from Dr. Adriana García at least two awards in memory of her parents-Adriana & Rafael García- will be given to students pursuing study abroad.
THE ISRAEL S. STAMM MEMORIAL PRIZE AWARD
Two monetary prizes awarded each spring to outstanding senior students who have majored or minored in one or two modern or classical languages at Rutgers-Newark.
In addition, the Department offers several awards and prizes for the highest grade-point average in Central & Eastern European Studies, French, Portuguese, and Spanish and Hispanic Civilization.
