Nela Navarro is a member of the faculty of the department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literature, and an affiliate member of the English Department at Rutgers University, Newark. Nela received her undergraduate education at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, where she majored in Comparative and Applied Linguistics and European Intellectual History. She received her graduate education at the University of the Andes, Colombia, and at Columbia University, New York, where she studied Spanish Language, Literature and Applied Linguistics. Her areas of research include Applied Linguistics, Language and Technology, Language and Culture, First and Second Language Acquisition, Methods Training and International Education.
Nela has been a lecturer at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and Chazen Business School, where she taught Spanish for International Relations and English as a Second Language. Nela was also a full time visiting lecturer at Shanghai International Studies University, China, where she taught English as a Foreign Language and British Literature. She currently consults on educational, training and development projects for various educational publishers and educational institutions, such as Oxford University Press, Pearson Education, Kaplan, Educate, Educational Testing Services, and Merriam Webster, Scholastic and McGraw Hill.
Nela’s interests in the role of technology, education,
language and cross-cultural training in promoting human rights and social
reform have led her to work on various projects with NGOS. Her most recent
project was with the Soros Foundation Burma Project, where she developed materials
for training initiatives for higher education bound Burmese refugees.
