Department of
Economics
Welcome to the Rutgers Newark Economics Department Web
page. Modern-day economics traces its beginnings to the publication of
Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations in 1776. The great early 20th
century economist Alfred Marshall defined economics as the “study
of mankind in the ordinary business of life.” Our discipline is the
only social science in which a Nobel
Prize is awarded.
