352:334 Survey of American Literature
Ehrlich, January 30, 2009

For next week, we are reading "Daisy Miller" on Wednesday (Feb. 4), and "Roman Fever" on Friday (Feb. 6). Write an essay of 2-4 pages for Friday, February 6 (postponed to Wednesday, Feb. 11), on the following:

Although Henry James and Edith Wharton were not of the same generation -- "Daisy Miller" was published in 1878 and "Roman Fever" in 1934 -- they were friends as writers and came from a similar New York upper class background. The two stories, about possible romances of well-to-do Americans in Italy, have a similar subject matter in what they select as their settings. But are the two stories also similar in how and why they treat their subjects? Please consider why the two stories were written, their outcomes, their effect, their message for the reader. What do you regard as the apparent purpose of each story? In this regard do you find them essentially similar or different?

In arguing your case, keep plot summary and paraphrase (and other common knowledge) to a minimum. Instead, develop your case with supporting arguments, using carefully selected evidence in the form of short quotations to prove your case. Place the page number citations to the Norton 7th edition in parentheses within your text.
