Agenda: Stephen DeRose , Chief Scientist, EBT
"SGML and the Future of the Web: XML
and Other Alternatives"
Lori DeFurio, Adobe
A FrameMaker+SGML case study
Bernie Winston, ArborText
ArborText's XML plans and upcoming products
Stephen DeRose, Chief Scientist at Electronic Book Technologies, Inc.,
(a subsidiary of Inso Corporation), and founding member of the
"Generic SGML Working Group" organized by the W3C (the World Wide Web
Consortium) will discuss XML (EXtensible Markup Language).
XML has been called "the on ramp to SGML." It is an initiative by
some of the leading thinkers and developers in the SGML
community to make SGML simple again by getting it back to its roots --
"using tags that say what something is, not what it should look like!"
XML is a simple dialect of SGML the goal of which "is to enable
generic SGML to be served, received, and processed on the Web in the
way that is now possible with HTML."
Background information on XML can be found on the Web at Robin
Cover's SGML bibliography at http://www.sil.org/sgml/related.html#xml.
Steve is coming to us straight from the first XML Conference,
cosponsored by the GCA and SGML Open, so he should have plenty to tell
us about how XML is being accepted by both users and vendors. Steve's
presentation will be an introduction to the subject for New York SGML
users. If members are sufficiently interested in the subject, the Forum
will arrange a longer, in-depth program for later this year.
Lori DeFurio of Adobe will present a FrameMaker+SGML case study where
Frame was used to support Web publishing.
Bernie Winston of ArborText, the makers of the ADEPT SGML editor, will
talk about his company's plans regarding Web Publishing, including XML
and other approaches.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS
The Forum will be presenting longer, more in-depth programs this
year, and we are planning more of the 1/2 day training programs again.
Specific programs in the works are:
- An SGML product shoot-out, showing how different SGML products
handle a comparable test application.
- Introductory training course on document analysis and DTD writing
- An SGML mini-conference in conjunction with SGML University that
will include reduced-cost enrollments for SGML University hands-on
product training.
- The Spring Seybold Seminar has moved from Boston to New York, and
will be held this April at the Jacob Javits Center. Seybold is making
a special offer to members of the Forum. Details will be provided at
the meeting and in a separate e-mail message.
