95tips.html"
For some reason I've been curious lately about how to make Windows 95 work better and have found helps and tips which I'd like to share.
1. Microsoft includes an excellent TIPS.TXT file in the \Windows directory, But few people know about it, apart from "experts" who borrow >From it in their magazine columns without much acknowledgment.
2. Several hackers have created tip-rich .HLP files which can be loaded into their own window or printed out.
3. Other helpful souls have offered discussions as Web pages or as downloadable texts offering ways of solving Windows 95 problems.
4. A few hackers have realized that Win 95 works powerfully with DOS and have explained how Win 95 and DOS 7.0 can be used together.
5. I'm not going to review "cool tips" on making the Win 95 interface prettier by substituting animations for icons or playing with colors, etc. No calendars here for your tip of the day, either!
The "tips" seem to fall into several categories:
A. Configuring the Taskbar, Start, Desktop, and Shortcuts.
B. Understanding Windows Explorer, folders, and finding, copying, moving, renaming, deleting files among various directories and drives, including continual backups.
C. Using keystrokes, not mouseclicks and mousesmears.
D. Making Win 95 and DOS 7.0 work together: using DOS utilities and batch files, using new stuff in DOS (yes!), launching Windows programs >From the command line, accessing DOS from the Desktop, and maximizing memory for DOS.
E. Flexible bootup, shutdown, emergency disks, configuring Startup.
F. Windows 95 freeware, shareware, and software.
Here are some helpful sources of tips -- apart from the TIPS.TXT file in your \WINDOWS directory:
