COLLEGE BY COMPUTER CATCHES ON

Technology is changing the concept of a college education. More than 1
million "students are now plugged into the virtual college classroom: --
compared with the 13 million who attend "brick-and-mortar schools," the June
16 issue of Forbes magazine reports. The number of "cyber-students" is
expected to triple by the turn of the century. The appeal: convenience and
cost. Forbes reports that more than 1,200 four-year colleges offered courses
by computer last year. Some of the best, according to the magazine: Brevard
Community College, Cocoa, Fla. (www.brevard.cc.fl.us); Carnegie Mellon,
Pittsburgh (www.gsia.cmu.edu); Colorado State, Fort Collins
(www.colostate.edu/Depts/CE/); Michigan State, East Lansing (www.msu.edu);
Indiana University System, Bloomington (www.extend.indiana.edu); Washington
State University, Pullman (www.eus.wsu.edu/edp) and the New School for Social
Research, New York (www.dialnsa.edu).
