NEW YORK, June 15 (UPI) -- Fifty years ago this July there was a
mysterious crash near the town of Roswell, N.M.
The U.S. Air Force said it was a top-secret weather balloon developed
to spy on the Soviet Union. UFO enthusiasts said it was an alien
spaceship, and the Air Force covered it up.
The debate has raged ever since, and a new poll by Time magazine
suggests the alien side is picking up converts.
The poll released today (Suday) says more than half the nation
believes there is intelligent life in the universe, and a third think
aliens have visited Earth.
Of that third, 65 percent believe a UFO crash-landed in Roswell.
The survey of more than 1,000 people contacted June 4-5 has a margin
of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
