The Journal of Global Change and Governance is organizing a Symposium on Analyzing Risk in the 21st Century. Convening on February 12, 2010, practitioners, policymakers and scholars will be brought together to inform each other, and find solutions to, the challenges many organizations face in assessing, managing, reducing and bearing risks stemming from the following areas:

  • Terrorism
  • Crime
  • Cyber Threats
  • Labor Issues
  • Political and Regulatory Environments
  • Ecological, Environmental and Public Health

As perceptions of the above risk factors shift, various questions that we seek to derive answers and solutions to emerge:

  • What are the major risks to organizations resulting from their operations?
  • How can risk management cultures be fostered?
  • What events and long-term trends will affect the operations of organizations?
  • What are the major risks facing organizations emanating government policies?
  • What is the relationship between those who generate risks and those who manage and control these risks?
  • At what point will the costs of a chosen strategy begin to outweigh its benefits? How do we know when that point has been reached?
  • How much information regarding the risks facing an organization can be made known to employees, investors and regulators?
  • Can practitioners and scholars together devise useful models and strategies pertaining to the assessment and management of risk?
