English Literature 1660-1745
English 325
Autumn 2000
English 325 explores British culture in the first half of the
"long" eighteenth century-from the Restoration in 1660 through
about 1745. We'll explore this great age of satire and
exploration by examining some of the literature, history,
philosophy, art, and music of the period. Works will include
Behn's Oroonoko, Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Swift's
Gulliver's Travels, Pope's Rape of the Lock, and
Gay's Beggar's Opera. Two mid-length papers and a short
final exam.
