Major Authors:
Johnson and Boswell

Most of a century is known to history as "the age of Johnson," named for the larger-than-life literary figure, Samuel Johnson, who lived from 1709 to 1784. In this class we'll read some of Johnson's own works, as well as works by his friend and biographer James Boswell. We'll look at city life and crime, travel and politics, sex and poetry, God and death, all through the eyes of two of London's most lively and colorful inhabitants. In the process we'll try to understand how they let us understand the age in which they lived.
