Early Modern Women's Literature

This wide-ranging course will examine the poetry, prose, and drama of British women writers from the early seventeenth through the early nineteenth centuries, focusing on the place of women in British society. Since questions about the canon will often figure in our discussions, the readings will include both canonical writers (Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane Austen) and marginal ones (Elizabeth Cary, Sarah Scott). The readings may include lyric poems, plays, novels, short stories, travel narratives, and political tracts.
