English 9, "From Epic to Hypertext," with Jack Lynch.

Course Description

Although the novel has come to dominate our ideas of narrative, a much wider range of narratives is available for study. In this course we'll read some of these other fictional and non-fictional narratives in both prose and in verse: epic, myth, fabliau, short story, folk ballad, biography, chronicle, slave narrative. Works might include selections from The Odyssey, the Canterbury Tales, Edgar Allen Poe, Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, and Nabokov's Pale Fire. We'll finish the course by looking into the future of narrative, including hypertext.
