Autumn 1999

Jack Lynch

"The medium," said Marshall McLuhan, "is the message." This course will explore the relationship between modern media and modern messages, with particular attention to the brave new world of the World Wide Web. Readings and discussions will address the fate of reading, writing, and researching in the digital age, as well as how earlier ages have dealt with their own technologies of the word. Technical expertise is welcome but not necessary.
