SUMMARY

In the letter to Pehr Elvius, the secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Linnaeus reminds him of the responsibility of the Academy for obtaining a place for Christopher Tärnström on one of the four ships leaving for East India in the autumn or winter of 1745. He fears that there will be no more opportunities. With the assistance of admiral Theodor Ankarcrona, Elvius ought to make the East India Company act in this matter. Linnaeus thanks for an observation sent to him and promises to send one of his own. He also asks for observations from Pehr Kalm. Finally he notices that he had not received the bird he had requested. Had it flown away from the letter?

NOTES

[1] Pehr Elvius, the secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

[2] This was Linnaeus’s second attempt to secure employment for Christopher Tärnström on one of the ships of the East India Company. Tärnström obtained the position a month later, left for China in February 1746 but died during the voyage. See Grape, “Om Christopher Tärnströms resejournaler”, 126-144, and Lindroth, Vetenskapsakademiens historia, I:2, 633-634.

[3] See Genesis 19:17; Ezechiel 3:19.

[4] Linnaeus probably refers to Triewald, “Den tredje fortsätningen af rå silkes afvelen”. According to the records of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences of 14 September 1745, it had recently been sent to Linnaeus.

[5] Probably Linnaeus, “Glömska af alla substantiva och i synnerhet namn”.

[6] Linnaeus refers to Kalm, “Rön vid ängs-skiötzeln”.

[7] Linnaeus refers to the printer’s proof of the treatise, “Storm-väders-fogelen”.
