ISECS North-South Seminar

With a view to assist scholars from developing countries or countries with weak currencies to conduct their research in the countries which hold the documents vital to their studies, ISECS has created a North South seminar which held its first session in Dijon from 15 June to 15 July 1995.

The theme of the seminar was The Enlightenment and international solidarity and its name will be 'Séminaire Condorcet', in honour of the first philosopher who made a connection between overpopulation, famine and the necessity of equitable international institutions.

The seminar welcomed five researchers from India, the Ivory Coast, Togo, Senegal and Argentina. Another researcher from Mauritania, subsidized by his own university, will also participate.

The organization of the seminar was as follows: the researchers stayed at the University of Bourgogne with all expenses (travel, board and lodging) paid. Each week a one-day seminar was held in the course of which they met recognized authorities in their field who chaired debates on 'The Enlightenment and Africa', 'The Enlightenment and Asia', and 'The Enlightenment and South America'. In the last week there was a two-day colloquium (11 and 12 June 1995) on the theme of the seminar.
