Summary Data Regarding the Clergy-Physicians

The summary includes MDs only Not the DDS Degrees

86.2% of the clergy-physicians earned the medical degree first and then waited an average of 20.1 years before being ordained.

The 13.8 percent who were ordained earned their medical degrees an average of 6.8 years after ordination; to do so they had to go to medical school very soon after ordination.

27.3% are deacons, 72.7% are priests.
14.1% are females, 85.9% males.
88.9% are married, 11.1% are not.

The average age of all clergy-physicians, is 64.8.

83.4% of the clergy-physicians are under 66, and the average age of those under 66 is 55.3.

At the time first gathered, 99 priests and deacons had earned an MD degree, or 0.6% of the 17,500 clergy listed in the Clerical Directory for 2001.
