The Smallest Dioceses

One-third of the dioceses of the Episcopal Church have fewer than 10,000 communicants, and only ten percent of all Episcopalians live in these 33 dioceses:

Rochester 9,998

Navajoland 388
Total: 202,049

Navajoland is not only the smallest diocese in the Episcopal Church; it is also had the greatest reduction in membership in the decade 1992-2002 (down 208 members, or 34.9%). Is anyone listening? Does anyone care? Does this loss reflect a loss of tribal confidence in Rt. Rev. Stephen Plummer, who took a year's leave of absence in 1993 after accusations surfaced of sexual involvement with a male adolescent? No contributions from the diocese, not even a widow's mite, have been recorded. Native Americans are enormously generous; does this record suggest that few of them feel members of the Episcopal family? Navajoland contributed enormously to the worship of General Convention in Phoenix in 1991. Let those with ears hear what the Spirit is saying to this church.

Michigan: Special cases

The Diocese of Eastern Michigan split off from the Diocese of Michigan in the middle of the decade. The combined total of both in 2002 (32,358) is an increase of 4% in communicants over the total for the Diocese of Michigan in 1992, for an estimated rank between 66 and 67 out of 100 domestic dioceses. I have let the two dioceses split the same rank.

The Parochial Reports Office of General Convention provides me with this data as current on March 19, 2004. Although Eastern Michigan was not a diocese in 1992, the Office has calculated attendance of those parishes that became a part of that diocese when it was created in 1995. Data here for the Diocese of Michigan in 1992 reflects only those parishes that remained in that dicoese in 2002.

The Parochial Reports Office of General Convention provided me with the data Average Sunday Attendance Data as current on March 19, 2004.

I culled communicant data from The Episcopal Church Annual for all years reported. The Annual reports data for two years earlier, i.e., the 2004 Annual reports data for 2002.

Until 2002 the Annual was not able to obtain accurate data for dioceses in Province 9 (Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador Central, Ecuador Litoral, and Honduras) nor for extra provincial dioceses (Convocation of American Churches in Europe, Haiti, Taiwan, and the Virgin Islands). See the limited 2002 data that is available. In 2003 Rt. Rev. Lloyd Allen, President of Province 9, pledged to Executive Council that parochial reporting from that province would improve.
