[Date Prev][Date Next][Date Index] [Contrary] Summer Issue & Call
Beloved readers and writers, You can find submissions and mailing list information at the end of this courriel. First we have some good news. Contrary writers have recently won four prestigious awards: Amy Reed's "How You Remember Her" (Contrary, summer 2007) was named a notable story in the Million Writers competition and was also named a notable story in the Best of the Web competition by Dzanc Books. Thomas King's "Household Poisons" (autumn 2007) will be reprinted in the Dzanc Books anthology of the best online work from 2007. And Gregory Lawless's poem "Snapshots of the Epic" (spring 2007) was honored as one of the Best of the Net by Sundress Publications. You can find links to these prize winners on the front page of the new summer issue. Just click on the laurels. The summer issue, just published, begins with a heartful story by the Michigan writer Vincent Reusch. We also have short fiction from Amy Sarig King, J.M. Patrick, and Contrary regular Edward Mc Whinney, an Irishman lately taken to wandering the Costa Brava. We would also like to introduce a new writer, Susan Anderson, a mother, grandmother, and widow living in New Jersey, whose triptych of vignettes, "Alone in Paris," is her publication debut. There is poetry from S.L. Wisenberg, who teaches creative writing at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago; John M. Anderson, who teaches creative writing at Boston College; and Meg Franklin, whose poem "Parable of Sensitive Skin," was inspired by the ingredients label on a bottle of lotion. A "seiche" is a rogue wave on a massive lake, and in an inspired work of commentary, the Chicago writer Joseph Drogos traces the seiche from the wind-swept expanses of Lake Michigan to the memory-swept souls of writer and reader. Also, reviews of work by SUSAN MILLAR DUMARS, FRANK CONROY, ALEKSANDAR HEMON, JEAN VALENTINE, BETH HELMS, ROBERT MACFARLANE, ED REGIS, and DONALD RAY POLLOCK. We wish you a summer contrary to economic indicators, Jeff McMahon SUBMISSIONS: Please note that all the submissions we are now receiving will be considered for Winter 2009. That's because of more good news: Autumn 2008 is Contrary's fifth-anniversary issue, and we are busily planning the fireworks show. Contrary accepts submissions only through the online form on the submissions page. You'll find the link on page one. We pay upon publication. Next deadline: Dec. 1. --- You may unsubscribe or otherwise manage your subscription to this listserve here: https://listhost.uchicago.edu/mailman/listinfo/contrary
