Louie Crew's Natter [BLOG][Date Prev][Date Next][Date Index] [HoB/D] Diocesan scores on this question: What percent of "card-carrying" (=confirmed) Episcopalians are in church on an average Sunday?
I computed these percentages based on the average Sunday attendance in each diocese divided by the number of communicants in each diocese. Both types of data are recorded in the 2008 EPISCOPAL CHURCH ANNUAL, pages 16-19. The ANNUAL derived its data from parochial reports filed in 2006. Are these percentages of any significance? Researchers report that average attendance data is more reliable that communicant data. Are the two sets of data too flawed to be trusted when combined? Note that some of our numerically 'small' dioceses get a higher score here than some of our numerically 'large' diocese. ======================== Average Sunday Attendance as a percent of Communicants, from highest to lowest Rank % of attendance on average 1 117.9% Taiwan 2 92.8% Central Ecuador 3 81.1% Dominican Republic 4 80.2% Venezuela 5 68.7% Haiti 6 65.1% Puerto Rico 7 63.6% Quincy 8 60.8% Eastern Oregon 9 60.5% Virgin Islands 10 54.2% Northern Michigan 11 54.2% Northern Indiana 12 52.8% Lexington 13 52.6% Albany 14 51.9% Indianapolis 15 51.7% Fond du Lac 16 51.6% Southwest Florida 17 51.6% Hawaii 18 51.4% Central Florida 19 51.3% South Carolina 20 51.3% Springfield 21 50.9% Rochester 22 49.9% Western North Carolina 23 49.9% Northwestern Pennsylvania 24 49.9% Fort Worth 25 49.3% Eau Claire 26 49.1% Nevada 27 48.9% Pittsburgh 28 48.8% Washington 29 48.8% West Texas 30 48.5% Milwaukee 31 48.4% Tennessee 32 48.2% Nebraska 33 48.2% West Tennessee 34 48.1% West Virginia 35 48.0% Easton 36 47.4% Western New York 37 47.4% San Joaquin 38 47.4% Vermont 39 47.2% Oregon 40 47.1% Kentucky 41 46.8% Montana 42 46.8% New York 43 46.8% Rio Grande 44 46.7% Arizona 45 46.6% Northern California 46 46.6% Eastern Michigan 47 46.5% Southeast Florida 48 46.5% West Missouri 49 46.2% Georgia 50 45.7% Navajoland 51 45.6% Olympia 52 45.5% Central Pennsylvania 53 45.5% El Camino Real 54 45.3% Southern Virginia 55 45.1% Western Kansas -----------------------------------The middle (median) 56 45.0% Kansas 57 44.9% Ohio 58 44.8% Oklahoma 59 44.7% Maine 60 44.7% Colorado 61 44.3% Western Michigan 62 44.2% San Diego 63 44.1% Texas 64 44.0% Honduras 65 43.9% Western Massachusetts 66 43.9% Southern Ohio 67 43.8% Southwestern Virginia 68 43.2% Michigan 69 43.2% Central New York 70 43.0% Arkansas 71 42.9% Dallas 72 42.9% Iowa 73 42.7% East Carolina 74 42.7% Central Gulf Coast 75 42.6% Chicago 76 42.6% Delaware 77 42.5% Spokane 78 42.4% Mississippi 79 42.3% Louisiana 80 42.1% Florida 81 42.0% East Tennessee 82 42.0% Minnesota 83 41.8% Long Island 84 41.8% New Jersey 85 41.8% New Hampshire 86 41.7% Atlanta 87 41.7% Northwest Texas 88 41.4% Colombia 89 41.0% Los Angeles 90 40.7% South Dakota 91 40.7% Upper South Carolina 92 40.7% Virginia 93 40.2% North Carolina 94 40.1% The Convocation of American Churches in Europe 95 39.6% Connecticut 96 39.6% Bethlehem 97 39.6% Idaho 98 39.3% Pennsylvania 99 39.1% North Dakota 100 38.9% Western Louisiana 101 38.7% California 102 38.6% Massachusetts 103 38.4% Missouri 104 38.1% Maryland 105 37.3% Rhode Island 106 37.1% Utah 107 37.0% Alabama 108 36.2% Newark 109 35.6% Alaska 110 35.5% Wyoming 111 18.9% Litoral Ecuador As a variation, I computed the average percent of attendance by province: Prv % of communicants in church on average 1 41.9% 2 48.2% 3 44.5% 4 45.4% 5 48.6% 6 42.5% 7 44.8% 8 49.0% 9 60.5% I hope readers will share on the list what they make of this information. E.g., are those out West really less likely to 'sleep in' than those in New England? It appears the Diocese of Taiwan is attracting more visitors than communicants. The first number is 'average Sunday attendance,' the second 'confirmed communicants.' 10,639 28,751 Alabama 2,005 5,625 Alaska 7,423 14,105 Albany 9,677 20,740 Arizona 5,085 11,815 Arkansas 17,792 42,646 Atlanta 4,423 11,179 Bethlehem 9,613 24,826 California 735 792 Central Ecuador 15,686 30,491 Central Florida 7,099 16,635 Central Gulf Coast 6,094 14,121 Central New York 5,735 12,611 Central Pennsylvania 14,221 33,387 Chicago 962 2,325 Colombia 12,710 28,449 Colorado 20,118 50,822 Connecticut 12,922 30,101 Dallas 4,148 9,743 Delaware 3,025 3,730 Dominican Republic 7,454 17,464 East Carolina 5,820 13,865 East Tennessee 3,029 6,498 Eastern Michigan 1,229 2,022 Eastern Oregon 3,366 7,006 Easton 1,003 2,036 Eau Claire 5,279 11,612 El Camino Real 9,695 23,004 Florida 2,494 4,820 Fond du Lac 7,155 14,339 Fort Worth 7,281 15,775 Georgia 14,066 20,463 Haiti 3,379 6,551 Hawaii 12,338 28,050 Honduras 1,965 4,968 Idaho 4,455 8,582 Indianapolis 3,533 8,237 Iowa 4,922 10,928 Kansas 3,923 8,334 Kentucky 3,308 6,263 Lexington 744 3,929 Litoral Ecuador 17,341 41,442 Long Island 21,230 51,739 Los Angeles 5,797 13,715 Louisiana 5,016 11,211 Maine 13,068 34,272 Maryland 21,109 54,686 Massachusetts 8,606 19,906 Michigan 4,999 10,317 Milwaukee 8,546 20,360 Minnesota 7,528 17,755 Mississippi 4,943 12,877 Missouri 2,083 4,451 Montana 205 449 Navajoland 3,483 7,221 Nebraska 2,223 4,529 Nevada 4,553 10,890 New Hampshire 16,710 39,939 New Jersey 21,418 45,768 New York 9,817 27,147 Newark 16,288 40,505 North Carolina 765 1,957 North Dakota 6,350 13,618 Northern California 2,597 4,795 Northern Indiana 800 1,476 Northern Michigan 2,550 6,122 Northwest Texas 1,989 3,986 Northwestern Pennsylvania 9,661 21,525 Ohio 6,444 14,399 Oklahoma 11,826 25,943 Olympia 7,154 15,166 Oregon 17,151 43,679 Pennsylvania 7,902 16,148 Pittsburgh 2,523 3,873 Puerto Rico 1,105 1,738 Quincy 6,504 17,428 Rhode Island 5,667 12,115 Rio Grande 3,959 7,773 Rochester 8,071 18,269 San Diego 3,947 8,326 San Joaquin 13,861 27,017 South Carolina 2,550 6,262 South Dakota 13,385 28,793 Southeast Florida 8,890 20,254 Southern Ohio 12,574 27,727 Southern Virginia 15,778 30,577 Southwest Florida 4,532 10,352 Southwestern Virginia 2,538 5,975 Spokane 2,429 4,736 Springfield 803 681 Taiwan 6,494 13,422 Tennessee 29,611 67,103 Texas 1,354 3,375 The Convocation of American Churches in Europe 8,755 21,508 Upper South Carolina 1,689 4,550 Utah 396 494 Venezuela 3,073 6,483 Vermont 2,251 3,720 Virgin Islands 26,353 64,743 Virginia 15,794 32,333 Washington 4,609 9,916 West Missouri 3,675 7,625 West Tennessee 10,592 21,725 West Texas 3,698 7,695 West Virginia 874 1,940 Western Kansas 4,015 10,313 Western Louisiana 6,057 13,790 Western Massachusetts 5,045 11,400 Western Michigan 5,127 10,811 Western New York 7,008 14,034 Western North Carolina 2,235 6,296 Wyoming Lutibelle/Louie, L1 Newark Louie Crew, 377 S.
