[HoB/D] Diocesan scores on this question: What percent of "card-carrying" (=confirmed) Episcopalians are in church on an average Sunday?

  • To: Bishops Deputies Discussion <BishopsDeputies@hobd.org>
  • Subject: [HoB/D] Diocesan scores on this question: What percent of "card-carrying" (=confirmed) Episcopalians are in church on an average Sunday?
  • From: Louie Crew <lcrew@andromeda.rutgers.edu>
  • Date: Sun, 10 Aug 2008 14:49:34 -0400 (EDT)

I computed these percentages based on the average Sunday attendance in each
diocese divided by the number of communicants in each diocese. Both types of
data are recorded in the 2008 EPISCOPAL CHURCH ANNUAL, pages 16-19. The
ANNUAL derived its data from parochial reports filed in 2006.

Are these percentages of any significance? Researchers report that average
attendance data is more reliable that communicant data. Are the two sets of
data too flawed to be trusted when combined?

Note that some of our numerically 'small' dioceses get a higher score here
than some of our numerically 'large' diocese.

8	49.0%
9	60.5%

I hope readers will share on the list what they make of this information.
E.g., are those out West really less likely to 'sleep in' than those in New
England?

It appears the Diocese of Taiwan is attracting more visitors than
communicants.

See a map for TEC provinces at
http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/%7Elcrew/provinces.jpg

And for those who like to see the raw data. The first number is 'average
Sunday attendance,' the second 'confirmed communicants.'
