Caveat: Limits to ZIP code data

Zip code boundaries often do not correspond with parish membership. On the other hand, they are usually more precise than county norms, the next level up provided by the U.S. census bureau. Sometimes interested persons will need to look at the demographics of several zip codes.

It's important not to cheat on that, however, either to make ourselves look more responsible than we are, or less responsible. For example, many, as I once did, would guess that my own parish, Grace/Newark, would draw a large portion of its members from afar, since we have historically been downtown, away from population center. I checked our parish mailing list and discovered that 60 percent of us live in Newark, Irvington, Hillside, or East Orange. I suspect that an even larger percent of those in the pews come from this area close to the parish's 07102 zip code, zips with much the same demographics--a claim that I have not yet tested.

As limited as they are, zip codes still far more closely reflect the demographics of my parish than statistics for Essex County. Bloomfield, Essex Fells, Montclair, and several other communities in Essex County have little in common with the neighborhoods in which most of us at Grace Church live.

While I was serving on the St. James Housing Project, we hired a demographer to access an even narrower range of blocks which we defined as "neighborhood" -- as required by funders to whom we were applying. We found that financial and employment statistics of that neighborhood to be the poorest in Newark, which is the poorest in Essex County, which is the poorest (or next to poorest?, my memory slips) in New Jersey......

You don't have to hire a demographer to help you take much of the guess work out of computing the demographics for your own area. You don't even have to depend on my reports. Instead, access U.S. Census The Department's web site lets you access data more current than mine (I am using 1990 cds from the census bureau). You will also access data on far more variables that I am monitoring.

All of my reports require you to supply more context, often context that I do not have myself. For example, recently I asked reported:

At the other end of the spectrum, these fourteen parishes rank in their giving m ore than thirty places behind the rank of the median income in their zip codes:

This assumes that folks at Good Shepherd in Ringwood have incomes somewhere near the income of their neighbors. If they do, they must be awfully stingy. In fact, this parish is predominately Native American, and its zip code shows up having 99 Native Americans, the highest percent of Native Americans of any zip code in which our diocese has churches, albeit only 0.007821141 or .78%

It will be possible to misread that parish's use of endowments, soon to be reported for all, if you do not take account of who they are.

I rejoice that the data can prove helpful. I hope it helps us begin to answer some questions more precisely. Please put a fresh battery in your thinking cap before you use the data: do not assume that I have done that for you: I am but a number cruncher in this part of the process.

I welcome advice about how to get numbers that address even more closely our gospel imperatives. I also would welcome the opportunity to showcase any data others collect.
