Sector/Technology: Waste Recovery/Recycling Abstract

This project demonstrates successfully that cold road recycling, using
foamed bitumen, is a cost-effective and quick technique for repairing
not only lightly trafficked roads, but also busy main roads carrying
approx 18,000 vehicles/day. Savings arise because there is no need to
quarry, coat or transport the new roadstone normally used in
conventional road repairs; and there is less site excavated material for
disposal. The project was completed in 4.5 weeks, compared with the
12-14 weeks conventional methods would have taken. Using data from the
TRL rotating census, the predicted loading over the 20 year design life
for the road in this project is 11 million standard axles. Road tests
after 15 months' service indicated a residual life of between 11 and 17
years.
