Both a major and minor in Portuguese
and Lusophone World Studies are offered at NCAS.
The PLWS major is an interdisciplinary
degree program which includes courses in Portuguese language and Lusophone
literature, culture and history, while taking full advantage of Rutgers-Newark's
proximity to the Portuguese-speaking community of the Ironbound, so that
students can combine experiential learning with classroom instruction.
PLWS Major Requirements (36 credits)
1. 24 credits in Portuguese language,
literature and culture, which must include 21&62: 810: 131, 132 Intermediate
Portuguese (or equivalent preparation as demonstrated by proficiency examination).
Any of the PLWS numbered 200 or higher may be taken to satisfy this requirement.
2. 6 credits in the PLWS Core Classes,
21&62: 810: 342, 343 Portuguese and Lusophone World Civilization and
Culture
3. 6 credits in other courses within the
Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures or those
from appropriate NCAS departments, subject to the approval of the PLWS
program. The following are some examples of acceptable courses:

PLWS Minor Requirements
The minor in Portuguese and Lusophone
World Studies is interdisciplinary. It consists of 21 credits in Portuguese
language, literature and culture, as well as courses from appropriate
cooperating departments.
The minor requires the completion
of 15 core credits:
6 credits in language: 21&62:810:131:132 Intermediate
Portuguese or
21&62:810:203 Advanced Grammar and Composition
6 credits in civilization 21&62:810:342:343:
Intro to Portuguese and Brazilian Civilization and Culture
3 credits in literature: (conducted either
in Portuguese or in translation)
The remaining 6 credits may be satisfied
by choosing electives offered within the Portuguese program or other designated
classes in cooperating NCAS departments.
