Introduction
At Rutgers-Newark, the Office of Housing & Residence Life seeks to provide a comprehensive living environment for the various students who reside on campus. Therefore, in response to the large number of new residents entering into the residence halls each year, our office has instituted a support program to address the various academic and social needs of new students—“The First Year Focus Program”.

Why is the First Year Focus Program Necessary?
The First Year Focus (FYF) Program is committed to the academic, social and emotional wellness of first year students within the residence hall community at Rutgers-Newark. Under the directorship of a graduate assistant student staff member known as the Academic Fellow, FYF is used to implement building-wide strategic programming as well as one-on-one interventions to promote overall success for our first year students. In addition to working with the Resident Assistants and various other departmental resources, the Academic Fellow also uses student development theories and relevant research findings to explore the most effective means of providing new students with their fundamental needs for attaining success. A few examples of typical FYF programs include peer social mixers, faculty-staff socials, advisory workshops, time management and other academic success workshops—and the list goes on!!!
