A Message from the Chairperson

Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

The disciplines of Sociology and Anthropology are the two sciences that are most clearly dedicated to the study of “ourselves” – Where do we come from? Why do we perceive and behave in the ways we do? How can we improve our lives with one another? These and similar questions are fundamental to the human experience and the study of human social life not only informs us of who we are but also of how we can be better. It is an exciting realm of inquiry, and I invite you to explore this website to learn about our disciplines and the work pursued by the members of our department. I encourage you to visit the web pages of individual faculty members to learn about their recent work and the links provided to graduate programs and organizations with which we are affiliated.

Courses in both Sociology and Anthropology provide students with critical skills for analyzing and understanding complex problems and issues. Besides acquiring a basic knowledge of how people in our society and other societies around the world experience and interpret their worlds, Sociology and Anthropology students learn how to make and understand theoretically based arguments, how to acquire and assess data needed to evaluate the validity of some claim, and they become familiar with the fundamentals of survey research, ethnographic observation, interviewing and other methods of understanding social life. Most significantly, students taking courses in either discipline are provided the opportunity to learn how to write.

I invite students whether you major or minor in either discipline, or are just plain interested, to not hesitate to speak with members of our faculty for guidance, questions about careers in Sociology or Anthropology , internships, our work, or how to become involved in our research. You will find that we are a congenial group ready and willing to help and interested in your well being.

The scientific study of “ourselves” may at time be disconcerting to some. But understanding is the beginning of wisdom and wisdom is essential for human betterment.
