The campus of Rutgers University-Newark is located in the University Heights area of Newark, overlooking downtown Newark.  Manhattan is located 6 miles east of Newark, with its skyline visible from campus.

Other institutions of higher education in University Heights include the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and Essex County CollegeSeton Hall Law School is located in downtown Newark.
