General Information

In the summer of 2003, a team from Rutgers-Newark, directed by Prof. Robert R. Stieglitz, will join the ongoing archaeological excavations at the site of Castro Marim, an archaeological expedition initiated and directed by Prof. Ana Margarida Arruda (The Center of Archaeology, University of Lisbon) in 1983. The Rutgers team will dig at the site for 6 weeks. The excavations in 2003 will take place within the walls of  the large medieval castle, in order to unearth the stratigraphy and early history of the site.

Map of site (click to enlarge)

Castro Marim is situated in southeast Portugal, near the mouth of the Guadiana River, which is the current border between Portugal and Spain (see map at left). In the summer, the region is a major tourist attraction. In antiquity, Castro Marim was an important regional harbor town, as revealed by the finds of previous years (1983-88; 2000-02). During the Roman period, the site was named Baesuris (also Esuris). The first settlement was in the Late Bronze Age (1200-800 BC). In the course of the following centuries, the material culture indicates a settlement of native Lusitanians and extensive trade with Mediterranean peoples, including Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and others.

Students and volunteers are accepted for a minimum period of two weeks.  Students who wish to receive credit for participating in the expedition must stay for at least four weeks. There are no academic or other pre-requisites for participation in the PARP expedition. All instruction will be done in the field.
