Virtual Network Computing

Newark Computing Services offers Virtual Network Computing (VNC) to students, faculty, and staff. Through the Virtual Desktop users gain remote access to various software on the Rutgers — Newark timesharing UNIX servers without the use of SSH or X11 tunnelling. It can be used to launch and view long-running tasks from anywhere you have access to a web browser with Java.

How to Connect to the Virtual Desktop:

To start the Virtual Desktop click here:
Students: http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/desktop
Faculty and Staff: http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/desktop

In order to use this application you need to have a browser which supports Java. The following browsers have been tested:

  • Internet Explorer v6.0 and v7.0 .
  • Mozilla Firefox v2.0, v3.0, v3.5
  • Safari 3.0, 4.0

  • If Java is not enabled in your browser, install the Java Plugin as prompted by the browser, restart the browser and click on the link above.

Please read the directions on the Virtual Desktop start page.

When you run the application for the first time, the browser prompts you to verify the digital signature of the application. In order to avoid this pop up window, check the box which says:
"Always trust the content from the publisher" and click on run button.

After you click Run, the browser will pop up another window giving you the login prompt.

Note: Do not close the browser window or tab, doing so will result in the shutdown of the application and the whole process must be restarted.

When you see the login: prompt enter your NetID and press enter.
Type in your password and press enter. Nothing will be printed on the screen as you type your password.
