Internet & Information Technology Workshop Schedule
Spring 2000

All sessions will be held in the Electronic Classroom on the Lower Level of Dana Library, unless otherwise indicated. Everyone is welcome to attend the sessions, except for those offered to faculty members only. The workshops are free of charge. For registration, please send e-mail (preferred) to Dana Library or call (973) 353-5901. Be sure to include your name, status and email if any, and specify the workshop and date preferred. There is no limit to the number of workshops you may attend.

The Library on the Web Workshop
Learn how to use the Rutgers University Libraries information system whether you are on campus or at home.

The Web-based online catalog, IRIS, allows you to search for books and other materials, request or recall materials online, view your borrowing record, renew your own checked-out materials, and download or email search results from nearly anywhere, anytime. Rutgers students, staff, and faculty also have access to electronic indexes and subscriptions, searchable from wherever you happen to be.

The Compleat Internet Professor (Instructors: Veronica Calderhead, Jack Lynch, and Roberta Tipton)
For faculty only! A workshop/discussion designed to help you deal with issues of evaluation, plagiarism, and citation on the Internet. Come and share your best ideas for preventing and detecting plagiarism and for helping students to use this powerful information tool intelligently.

Composing Web Pages (Instructor: Ka-Neng Au) (Please contact [au@andromeda] before registering.)
Intended for individuals or groups that wish to compose research and/or service-oriented Web pages. Will cover the basic principles in Web page design and HTML composition. Enrollment is limited to 15 people. Participants are expected to take these classes in sequence.

Current Awareness in the Physical Sciences (Instructor: Veronica Calderhead)
Topics to be covered include electronic indexes, namely the Web of Science (the citation indexes), INSPEC, and other science indexes. Web material will focus on the sites developed by the societies, such as the American Chemical Society's ChemCenter, the American Physical Society's Website, e-Math from the American Mathematical Society, and some of the United States Geological Survey's extensive material. Bring your own questions.

Database Management Using Microsoft Access (Instructor: Michael Chumer)
This introductory session provides an overview of the basic capabilities of Access in designing a table, populating a table with data, and generating ad-hoc reports. It is suggested for students and faculty alike.

This introductory session provides an overview of the slide presentation capability of PowerPoint. It is recommended for faculty and students who anticipate using computer based slide presentations.

Streaming Video for Instruction (Instructor: Michael Chumer)
For faculty and staff only. New instructional technologies allow the incorporation of streaming digital video, audio, graphics, photgraphs, and text into web-based courses. These web-based courses have the potential to enhance student learning when used in conjunction with traditional face-to-face instruction development and delivery. During this workshop you will tour the Media and Digital Services facility on the 4th floor of the Dana Library to learn about the technologies in place that can assist you in creating your own courseware.

ISI Web of Science (Instructor: Marcella Barnhart - ISI)
Learn to search our recently acquired Web of Science, the enhanced web version of the arts and humanities, social sciences, and science citation indexes from the Institute for Scientific Information. It contains citations, abstracts, and cited references for articles in more than 8,000 high quality, peer-reviewed journals published from 1994 to the present. Also included are links to the full text of a growing number of articles in the electronic journals to which the Libraries subscribe.
