"On-Campus Career Fairs"

These events are open to all Rutgers University students and alumni. Career Fairs provide an invaluable opportunity to obtain information on different fields and industries while providing face-to-face networking with employers from corporate, government, and non-profit sectors. Internships as well as full and part-time employment opportunities are featured at these fairs. Scroll down for more information on each Fair.

Prepare For The Fair !!!
ADVICE FOR CAREER FAIR SUCCESS

CREATE AN EFFECTIVE AND PROFESSIONAL RESUME

Have a career counselor review it ahead of time to make sure it showcases your strengths. Bring plenty of copies with you to the Fair.

CREATE A STUDENT / CANDIDATE BUSINESS CARD

Have a career counselor review it to make sure it is professional in every possible way. Bring plenty of copies with you. Samples are available on the Career Development Center website and you can use the Career Center’s mini-computer lab to create and print your cards. Just bring the relevant supplies that you’ll need.

INVEST IN A BUSINESS SUIT

Remember that conservative is the theme, and colors and patterns should reflect this. The key element is to look sharp, be clean and have a positive attitude and pleasant personality. Remember too that employers are making judgments on their first impression of you, so make it a great one! Leave your backpack at home or in the trunk of your car and hang up your coat if possible.

RESEARCH EMPLOYERS THOROUGHLY

Show them that you have done your homework and really have a genuine interest in what they do. It is easy to research an employer through the Research links on the Career Development Center’s website or through the directory’s found in the CDC mini -library. Know what they do as well as some of their history. The single most important thing you can do to make a positive impression on a recruiter is to go to the job fair and ask specific questions about the company. There are also a number of sites on the web that not only list specific jobs but information on employers such as Glassdoor, Career Shift and GoinGlobal to name just a few. Also check your RaiderNet account for a list of employers that will be at the fair. Employer names are usually linked to their websites. When gathering information, concentrate on the most relevant data related to the position you want.

MAKE A LIST OF THE EMPLOYERS THAT YOU ARE MOST INTERESTED IN

Plan on first speaking to the ones at the top of your list. There will likely be lines for the most popular employers at the fair. DO NOT talk on your cell phone while you are waiting in line. This is disrespectful to those around you and considered unprofessional by many recruiters. Smile as you approach the recruiter and offer them a firm handshake. Introduce yourself by speaking in a clear and articulate manner.

USE YOUR TIME WISELY

Give a good professional handshake, firm but not bone crushing. Be prepared to offer your 30-60 second "elevator speach" to the table representative. Maintain good eye contact but do not stare (you may scare them!). Remember to ask relevant questions and ask for their business card. If no business card is available, make sure to get their full name, write it down, and use the company website to obtain contact details.

When going to more than one Fair, go to employers that were not at the last Fair you attended and then double back to visit the tables of employers that you may have talked with at a prior event. This is a good strategy !

BE SURE TO FOLLOW-UP

Once home, write a brief thank you note or email to those employers that interest you most.
